Roadmap
Template
A structured roadmap format that focuses on outcomes, not feature lists. Organize by horizon (Now/Next/Later) and link every item to customer evidence.
Why most roadmaps fail
Traditional roadmaps are feature lists with dates — and they're usually wrong within weeks. This template uses outcome-focused horizons that stay accurate even as specifics evolve.
Vision & strategy
The north star. What problem are you solving for whom? This anchors every roadmap decision.
Now (current cycle)
What's being actively built right now? 2-5 items max. Include status and linked customer feedback.
Next (1-2 cycles)
What's queued up? These are well-understood items with validated customer demand, ready to be pulled into 'Now.'
Later (future)
What's on the radar? Less defined, subject to change. Communicates direction without overpromising.
Customer evidence
For every item: which customers asked? How many? What's the sentiment? Data makes roadmaps defensible.
Pro tips
Start with a public 'Now' column and a private 'Next'/'Later.' Expand visibility as your delivery cadence proves reliable.
Review weekly: move items from 'Next' to 'Now' based on new data. A roadmap that's reviewed quarterly is already stale.
Link every item to real feedback. When a stakeholder asks 'why this?', you should be able to show the customer votes — not explain your reasoning.
Don't put dates unless you're confident. 'July 15' that slips to August 20 does more damage than 'Summer 2026' or no date at all.
Frequently asked questions
Should I make my roadmap public?
It depends. Public roadmaps build trust and reduce support tickets. But if you can't reliably deliver on timelines, keep it private until your cadence stabilizes.
How detailed should roadmap items be?
Enough to communicate intent — not implementation. 'Improve mobile onboarding flow' is better than 'Refactor React Native navigation stack.'
