RICE Framework

RICE is a feature prioritization framework that scores ideas on Reach, Impact, Confidence, and Effort. Learn how to use RICE for evidence-based roadmap decisions.

RICE is a feature prioritization framework developed by Intercom that scores product ideas on four dimensions: - Reach: How many users will this affect in a given time period? - Impact: How much will this move the needle for those users? (scored 0.25 for minimal, 0.5 for low, 1 for medium, 2 for high, 3 for massive) - Confidence: How sure are you about your reach, impact, and effort estimates? (scored as percentage) - Effort: How many person-months will this take?

RICE Score = (Reach × Impact × Confidence) / Effort

The RICE framework is popular because it balances quantitative data (reach, effort) with qualitative judgment (impact, confidence) in a simple, defensible formula. It reduces prioritization debates from opinion-based arguments to data-informed discussions.

The challenge is feeding RICE with accurate inputs. FeatureSay helps by providing real customer feedback data (reach and impact signals), vote counts (confidence indicator), and automated scoring that can be weighted to match a team's RICE or custom prioritization schema.
